You’re Certified, What’s Next? 5 SSI Specialties to Become a Better Diver

A huge congratulations is in order! You’ve completed your Open Water Diver course, earned that certification card, and taken your first breaths in the incredible underwater world. It’s a monumental achievement. But as the initial excitement settles, you might find yourself asking a very common question: “What’s next?” The Open Water Diver certification isn’t the finish line; it’s the starting gate. It provides you with the foundational skills to dive safely, but the ocean is vast, and the world of diving offers endless opportunities for growth and adventure. At Cactus to Coral Scuba, we believe the best way to continue your journey is through specialty training, which transforms you from a novice diver into a skilled and confident underwater explorer.

Why Continue Your Education?

The SSI philosophy is built on the Diver Diamond: proper knowledge, skills, equipment, and experience. Your initial certification gave you a solid base in each of these areas. Specialty courses are designed to expand upon them, allowing you to dive deeper into the aspects of scuba that excite you the most. Think of it as building a toolkit. Your Open Water course gave you a hammer and a screwdriver; specialty courses add wrenches, drills, and precision instruments, making you capable of handling a wider variety of situations with greater skill and less effort. Learning under the guidance of an experienced instructor is the fastest and safest way to build real-world competence and confidence.

Our Top 5 Recommended SSI Specialties for New Divers

While SSI offers dozens of exciting specialties, we’ve found that the following five provide the most significant and immediate benefits to a newly certified diver’s skill set and enjoyment.

1. SSI Perfect Buoyancy

If you take only one specialty course, make it this one. Mastering buoyancy is the single most important skill that separates new divers from experienced ones. It’s the key to effortless, graceful movement underwater. Do you want to consume less air and get longer dive times? Do you want to hover motionless to observe a shy creature without crashing into the reef? Do you want to look like a seasoned pro gliding thro

ugh the water? The answer is perfect buoyancy. This course fine-tunes your weighting, trim, and breathing techniques, turning a conscious effort into an unconscious skill. This is the foundation upon which all other advanced diving skills are built, making you a safer, more efficient, and more environmentally-conscious diver.

2. SSI Enriched Air Nitrox

This is the most popular specialty course in the world, and for good reason. Nitrox allows you to safely extend your no-decompression limits, which means more time underwater. The air in a standard scuba tank is about 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. It’s the absorption of nitrogen that limits your bottom time. Enriched Air Nitrox is simply a mix with a higher percentage of oxygen (like 32%) and therefore less nitrogen. By breathing less nitrogen, your body absorbs it more slowly, allowing you to stay at depth for longer. For repetitive dives on a vacation, it also means you may have shorter required surface intervals. This course will teach you how to safely use this gas, analyze your tank, and plan your dives to maximize your underwater exploration time.

3. SSI Navigation

Following a guide is easy, but what happens when you want to explore with just your buddy? The SSI Navigation specialty empowers you to become a self-reliant diver. This course removes the anxiety of getting disoriented underwater by teaching you essential skills like using a compass, estimating distance, and reading natural clues in the environment (like reef formations and sand ripples). Being a confident navigator means you can plan your dive and execute it, always knowing how to get back to your starting point. You’ll become a more observant diver and the buddy everyone wants to dive with because you’ll have the confidence to lead.

4. SSI Deep Diving

Your Open Water certification qualifies you to dive to a maximum of 60 feet (18 meters). But many of the world’s most iconic wrecks, dramatic walls, and unique marine life are found deeper than that. The SSI Deep Diving specialty is your ticket to this new realm of exploration. This course prepares you to safely dive to depths of up to 130 feet (40 meters). You’ll learn about planning deep dives, managing your gas supply more effectively, and recognizing and dealing with the physiological effects of diving deeper, like nitrogen narcosis. Safely unlocking the ability to explore deeper sites opens up a massive new portion of the underwater world for your adventures.

5. SSI Night & Limited Visibility

Think you’ve seen all a reef has to offer during the day? Think again. When the sun goes down, the reef completely transforms. Daytime critters retreat to sleep, and a whole new cast of nocturnal creatures—like lobsters, octopuses, and bioluminescent plankton—comes out to hunt and play. The SSI Night & Limited Visibility course teaches you how to use dive lights for communication and navigation, the procedures for entering and exiting the water in the dark, and how to spot the unique life that only appears at night. It’s an exciting and slightly mysterious experience that adds a whole new dimension to your diving skillset, making you a more versatile and adventurous diver.

Your Path Forward

The journey doesn’t stop here. Each specialty you complete not only makes you a better diver but also brings you one step closer to earning the coveted SSI Advanced Open Water Diver rating—a mark of distinction and experience. Your certification card is a license to learn, and the real adventure is just beginning.
